A Growing Family
In our last episode, we learned how Gaia (Mother Earth) and Uranus (the Sky God) came into being. Now, their family is growing — and not everything is happy in paradise.
Uranus and Gaia had 12 Titan children, and together they lived in peace for a time. The Titans were mighty beings, each ruling over a different part of the natural world. But Gaia also gave birth to some very unusual children...
The Cyclopes: One-Eyed Giants
Among Gaia's children were the Cyclopes — enormous giants, each with a single eye in the middle of their forehead. They were strong, skilled, and would one day forge some of the most important weapons in all of mythology.
These one-eyed giants may have looked frightening, but they were incredibly talented. They could shape metal in blazing fire and create weapons that no other being could match.
The Layers of the World
Did you know that the ancient Greeks believed the world had layers, almost like a giant sandwich? Here is how they imagined it, from top to bottom:
From Sky to the Deepest Depths
Mount Olympus sat at the very top — the home of the gods, high above the clouds. Below that was the Sky, the domain of Uranus. Then came the Earth, where humans and creatures lived.
Beneath the Earth lay Hades — the shadowy underworld where people went when they died. And deeper still, at the very bottom of everything, was Tartarus — a terrible underground prison, dark and inescapable.
Meet the Characters
Uranus
God of the Sky, father of the Titans and Cyclopes
Gaia
Goddess of the Earth, a fierce and protective mother
Cronus
The youngest Titan, brave enough to challenge his father
Cyclopes
One-eyed giants who would later forge weapons for Zeus
A Father's Cruelty
Uranus was powerful, but he was also afraid. Some of Gaia's children looked different — they were strange and mighty, and Uranus feared they might one day challenge him. So he did something terrible.
Uranus imprisoned some of Gaia's children deep in Tartarus, the darkest prison at the bottom of the world. He locked them away where no light could reach, far from their mother's arms.
A Mother's Fury
Gaia was heartbroken and furious. No mother could bear to see her children locked away in such a horrible place. She called out to her Titan children and begged them for help.
Most of the Titans were too afraid. Uranus was the god of the sky — how could anyone challenge such power? But one Titan stepped forward...
Cronus Answers the Call
Cronus, the youngest of the Titans, was the only one brave enough to face his father. Armed with courage and his mother's plan, Cronus overthrew Uranus and drove him from power.
With Uranus defeated, Cronus took the throne and became the new King of the Titans — the most powerful being in all the world. But would Cronus be a better ruler than his father? Or would power change him too?
