Zeus Overthrows Cronus

The thunder god rises to free his siblings

The Story

Last time, we talked about how Zeus was hidden on the island of Crete and grew up there. Zeus learned from his mother Rhea that all his siblings were trapped inside their father Cronus's belly. After growing up, he left Crete to confront his father.

Before meeting his father, Zeus received a magical potion from Metis, the goddess of wisdom.

The potion would make anyone throw up everything inside their belly. Zeus tricked Cronus, telling him it was good medicine. Cronus gulped it down without suspecting anything!

As soon as he drank it, Cronus began to suffer terribly. He threw up the stone and all five children he had swallowed! Cronus vomited up the stone and the five children he had swallowed.

The five young gods freed from Cronus's belly joined forces with Zeus. Together they attacked Cronus, and he fled, giving up his throne as god of the sky! Cronus ran to his Titan brothers and told them what happened.

The Titans were furious and decided to teach Zeus and his siblings a lesson! When Zeus heard the Titans were coming to attack, he was worried. Zeus and his siblings were much smaller than the Titans!

Because Zeus and his brothers were much smaller than the Titans. To fight the mountain-sized Titans, Zeus asked the Cyclopes and the hundred-armed giants trapped in Tartarus for help. The Cyclops brothers forged powerful weapons for them!

The Cyclops brothers made powerful weapons. For Zeus, they forged the mighty thunderbolt! For his brother Poseidon, they made a fearsome trident.

And for another brother, Hades, they crafted a helmet that made him invisible! Meanwhile, the three brothers with 100 arms each hurled endless boulders at the Titans during battle. After 10 years of war, Zeus finally defeated the Titans!

Zeus defeated the Titans after 10 years of fighting. The dark clouds over Mount Olympus cleared away, and a rainbow appeared.

Zeus locked the defeated Titans in the underground prison of Tartarus.

And he punished Atlas, the leader of the Titans, to hold up the sky forever! The place where Atlas holds up the sky is the Atlas Mountains in northern Africa. After defeating the Titans, Zeus and his siblings ruled the world from Mount Olympus.
