The Story
This time, I'll tell you about the brothers and sisters of Zeus! Including the five that Cronus threw up, Zeus had six siblings in total — three brothers and three sisters. Here in the palace on top of Mount Olympus, you can see them all. From left: Hades, Demeter, Hera, Zeus, Poseidon, and Hestia.
Poseidon ruled the sea. Hades ruled the underworld, where people go after they die. He mostly stayed in the darkness below and rarely came up to Mount Olympus.
Hera was Zeus's wife and the protector of married women. She was also the goddess who helped with childbirth. Demeter was the goddess of grain — also known as the goddess of farming.
Hestia was the goddess of the hearth. She protected the home and never once came down from Mount Olympus to the human world. I'm now on the island of Delos, which was once full of temples to the Greek gods. These were built about 3,000 years ago!
Now let's learn some English about what each god does! Zeus was the god of the sky. Poseidon was the god of the ocean.
Hades was the god of the underworld. Hera was the goddess of marriage and childbirth.
Hestia was the goddess of the hearth. Let me sit down and rest, my legs are tired!
